Southern Walkway - Wellington

Author: Ramnish Gupta

The Southern Walkway is one of the best and possible, the most underestimated walks in Wellington. Most Wellingtonians think of the walk up and down Mt Victoria as being the complete Southern Walkway. But, there is literally hours more to it. The Southern Walkway passes through a dozen or so Wellington icons and covers around eleven kilometres. Most people can cover the entire walk in around four to five hours.

It's best to think of the Southern Walkway as a complete day walk, especially if you wish to stop and explore the points of interest along the way. Some of the recommended spots to be seen are: Mt Victoria Summit, Bronze Cannon, Byrd Memorial, Truby King House and Gardens, Wellington Zoo, The Keep on The Esplanade and Island Bay. Apart from the places that can be visited on the way, there are also quite a few Wellington icons that can be seen from the walk including Te Papa, Basin Reserve, Queens Whark, Westpac Stadium, Wellington Airport and many others. Most of these can be seen from the Mt Vic Lookout Point, on the way up the mountain or on the way back.

There is detailed information and maps available on Wellington City Council's website. I would highly recommend this walk to anybody keen on a nice day walk on a clear Wellington day!
