After three weeks, almost four we will be completing our journey from Coast-to-Coast. From San Diego, CA to the South Carolina Coastline. Our last leg was a long one and we will soon be breathing and tasting the salt air of the Atlantic Coast after 3500 plus miles across the country by bike. Cycling the nation no matter what route you take is hardly an easy endeavor, there are huge mountain ranges and vast distances in the center to cross. But now we come to the end of our journey and head for the coast and then up into Virginia Beach, VA to finish the trek the next day. It is a good sixty miles to North East to Wilson SC on Hwy 301, which parallels I-95 until we will head due East. We will pass thru the towns of Dunn (appropriate name, but premature), Wade, Goodwin, Benson, Four Oaks, Smithfield, Selma, Micro, Kenly and Lucama. Now in Wilson SC we will use the Alt 64 Highway and take that around Greenville, NC to Highway 264. This is another 40 miles or 100 miles total for the day and yet it was an easy ride and now we smell victory, so we press on. Twenty more miles we hit Washington, NC and see the first sign of water at the Pamlico Inlet. 25 five more miles at mile marker 145 for the day it starts to get downright scenic indeed at Belhaven, NC. Twenty more miles we are at Scranton and 30 more miles the sun is going down and we rest in Englehard, NC. We have made it to the East Coast and yet we still have a ways to go. Consider this in 2006. |
