Smile, and Breakfast Will Be Served!

Author: Terry Price

Commonly known as the Jet Ski, a personal watercraft is a ton of fun on the water regardless of which way you look at it! It is usually less than 13 feet in length and has an internal combustion engine that powers a water jet as its primary source of propulsion. It carries one or more people that are usually positioned on top rather than within the confines of the hull and has no open load carrying area that could retain water. The new and larger versions can pull a skier, are trailer able, and, depending on the model can carry upwards of four people.

Most hulls are made from fiberglass-reinforced plastic resin and are of modified deep-Vee configuration. They come in a great range of bright colors and are easy to spot out on the water. Powered with two or four-stroke engines, the personal watercraft sports a horsepower rating that ranges from 40 to 80 hp. The drive system is sophisticated with an engine-driven water pump and a movable nozzle that directs a high-pressure stream of water.

The personal watercraft is priced between $4,500 to $10,000 US dollars new and you can also find some excellent used models around $ 1,000 US or more. Flying across a quiet lake with the wind blowing in your hair and the bugs in your teeth is one of the best ways to enjoy this awesome watercraft. Of course, it can also be used on the ocean for jumping waves, or pulling water skiers with ease. Most PWC's come with a three-seat capacity, one for the operator, one for the observer and one for the person being towed. They also allow much more maneuverability compared to a larger power craft.

Most of all remember to play safely, and don't operate your personal watercraft after sunset. Also, do not disturb wildlife or harm and aquatic vegetation.
