Meaning of Courage in the Twenty-first Century

Author: Vicheka Lay

Adolf Hitler was probably the most courageous man during the Second World War. But such the personality is not considered as "courageous" any more in our 21st century: a century that makes any one really hard to sustain a unique social image.

Remember that human needs to be flexible and receptive to make him or her potential to catch the valuable and existing things that the true majority are valuing. So walking on a very isolated path, like Hitler and Pol Pot, is not a worth-praised personality any more.

So what is courage? In explaining such the term, I will not use Oxford dictionary, World Book or Encartar, but I will use my own general and common understandings, drawn from my own experience and innate vision.

Courage is the stringent stance that you decide to always and unconditionally stick to and walk on until the final goal is reached, no matter how many billion of people think it is wrong. However, you final goal must not against the human right, law, international law, your country's constitution, the Charter of the United Nations and other social-order mechanism.

In all, walking and unconditionally stick to your stance that you think right and positive, in my opinion, is "courage" in our 21st century.

So, contemplate for a while to know whether you are a courageous person or not, with reference to my explanation.

Today, courage is arisen from mental hardship, but not from the deployment of physical war objects to solve the problems, as in the primitive time. This fact would be right during Alexander the Great, Hitler's or Pol Pot's reign, but to this 21st century, it is considered as "childish courage", a courage that will never bear fruit and when any courage does not bear fruit, such the courage is converted into "fear." And finally, when fear becomes the way of life, the state of nothingness will prevail.
