Pedophiles/Ephebophiles Extend Their Reach

Author: Dorothy M. Neddermeyer, PhD

Kurt Eichenwald, New York Times writes a compelling and disturbing article, "Dark Corners: On the Web, Pedophiles Extend Their Reach,"? August 21, 2006. Eichenwald thoroughly researched this topic including infiltrating on line chat groups. His extensive research confirms my belief that a Pedophile/Ephebophiles will not be deterred in their quest to engage in sex with children. http://www.nytimes.com/2006/08/21/technology/21pedo.html?ex=1156824000&en=af2f00ec0f9137f0&ei=5070&emc=eta1

"Today pedophiles go online to seek tips for getting near children" ?at camps, through foster care, at community gatherings and at countless other events. They swap stories about day-to-day encounters with minors. And they make use of technology to help take their arguments to others, like sharing online a printable booklet to be distributed to children that extols the benefits of sex with adults" ?"Straight Talk for Boys."? The booklet comes with instructions, advising pedophiles on how to distribute it. "The best and safest way is to leave quantities of the booklet in places where boys in the eight to fourteen range can find them, and where adults will not discover them too quickly,"? the instructions read. "Obviously, you don't want to be observed placing the booklets in your chosen locations."?"?

Furthermore, the booklet reflects how pedophiles can use the Internet to promote their interests in the real world. Like all their efforts, this involved deception, the booklet does not reveal, for example, that it has been written and distributed by men who are pedophiles, but instead portrays itself as objective fact.

Eichenwald's research confirms that Pedophiles/Ephebophiles are cunning predators with a honed mode of operation. They are experts at manipulation, thus escaping adult reality. They feel entitled, justifying their actions as loving; not harming the child. They expend considerable energy maintaining this illusion to themselves and others. They create a persona of goodness beyond reproach. They go to great lengths to present themselves as exemplary people, who love children. Michael Jackson's defense attorney, Mesereau, invoked this convoluted tactic in response to the judge's ruling that previous accounts of sexual abuse claims, which were settled, was admissible in court. Mesereau countered, "He [Jackson] also has spent millions on children with AIDS. We can drown them with examples of where Mr. Jackson has been so benevolent, so generous, so charitable, so giving for good causes, that it will make their theory look silly."

Eichenwald's article clearly illuminates the fact that Pedophiles/Ephebophiles are well organized, ban together and are infiltrating every aspect of your child's life" ?day care, camp, swimming, every sport, class rooms, family events and family friends. When will parents become organized, ban together and expose each and every Pedophile/Ephebophile before one strikes again?

I am baffled that many parents argue against what I am saying when I speak at teachers' conferences, PTO meetings, day care centers and pediatricians' offices. "That will never happen in my family or my neighborhood."?" ?they argue. They seem to only believe the neighborhoods on the other side of town are vulnerable to sex offenders. Why did you bother to come, if you believe your child is safe in all circumstances? I wonder. I have yet to find an answer to this pondering.

When will we come out of our well-guarded denial and stop Pedophiles/Ephebophiles from proliferating. Incarcerating sex offenders after the damage is done does little to stop the crime. The majority of sex offenders get out of jail in four years" ?85% re-offend. We need to change the approach to stopping this insidious crime. Stopping this crime begins at home" ?before the sex offender is an adult.
