6 Tips For Building A Successful Life & Business

Author: Brent Dees

1. Define Success. Everyone has a different definition when it comes to success. For some, it may be primarily focused on the financial. Others may see success as achievements primarily in the personal realm. I suggest defining success from financial, personal, and spiritual areas of life.

2. Develop a Personal Strategic Plan. Most people have goals, but few have outlined specific plans for achieving them. Having a plan enables people to clarify what they want to accomplish, develop a track to accomplish their desired result, and provides a structure to stay focused on their preferred future.

3. Manage your Plan Yearly, Quarterly, Monthly, Weekly, Daily. Most people have a calendar and to do lists, but don't take time to assess whether they are truly in line with strategic goals. Staying on top of your plan enables people to focus their time, their energy, and their creativity towards creating new growth opportunities for their business while avoiding the distractions of daily details and administration.

4. Build a Team. Most business owners have people who work for them. A common concern though is whether their employees can actually do the job well without supervision and constant guidance, which leads to more work for the business owner. By establishing clearly defined functional results, standards, and accountability, the owner can delegate without fear.

5. Develop an Expectant Attitude. People tend to worry about outcomes. Instead of focusing on the results they want, they fear the worst. This affects the business owner's mentality and creates a culture of low expectations.

6. Manage Your Integrity. Make a commitment to yourself and promise to keep it. People are skilled at coming up with reasons for not doing what they commit to do. Something comes up, they run out of time, the project is bigger than they anticipated, you get the picture. It's tempting to make excuses for not following through on commitments, but this weakens a person's integrity.
