Book Binding Supplies

Author: Elizabeth Morgan

Most bookbinders work with all materials including cloth, paper, and leather. These bookbinders can heat stamp and emboss all surfaces like gold, silver, and other colors. Some of the most important supplies for binding a book are the sheets, pressers, and sewing cords, in case of hand binding, as well as the stiff board sides.

In the event a binding machine that is being used, check for the binding element like a plastic comb or a double loop wire. One such double loop wire is the spiral-o wire known as the 19-ring wire. The binder should have crimping pliers to cut off he excess wire after the coil is inserted in the case of a coil binding. Coil binding machines also require a mandrel, which is a cylinder like unit used with coil binding machines with a coil inserter. The coil has to be wound around the mandrel before being inserted into the punched document. The size of the coil being used decides the size of mandrel.

All binding machines should have a die that is used to punch the paper. Some machines may have disengaging dies that allow the user to have complete control over the punching. However, disengaging dies cannot be completely removed as can be done in case of interchangeable dies. Also, all the machines will have a margin depth, although a few of them might have a fixed margin depth, while in the others the margin depth can be adjusted as per requirement. This indicates the depth to which the paper is punched. Pitch decides the type of holes that the machine punches.

Most machines have a nipper clamp to square the book cover off to fit it perfectly around the bound document. This is usually used to create paper bound book. All binders tend to have the waste or catch tray, to collect the punched out paper during punching.

PVA is a fast drying, long lasting, and transparent general-purpose polyvinyl acetate emulsion that can be used with paper, cloth, wood, ceramics, and plastic materials.
